Going for the gold?
The Ivies are some of the oldest and best-funded universities in the country, according to Paul Sunde, director of admissions at Dartmouth College. They’re also among the most competitive to get into. While many think the term “Ivy League” refers to the elite status of the schools, it actually just refers to the athletic conference to which the schools belong (hence why Stanford, a member of the Pac-12 conference, can never be an Ivy League school despite its academic excellence).
“Over the years, the number of people applying to Ivy League schools has climbed dramatically, but the enrolled student populations at these schools has not grown very much,” according to Sunde. “The result is a significant decrease in their acceptance rates.”
